MILROY — A long, long time ago Mifflin County won its first state title.

It was 1960 in Conshohocken (outside of Philadelphia).

The opponent was Broomall-Newtown.

Since then the two have battled with Mifflin County leading the series, 28-22. Seven times the two leagues have met for state championships with Mifflin County winning five times.

But, on Tuesday night stakes were much higher. The winner between the two 14-year-old teams would win the Mid-Atlantic title and advance to the World Series in North Dakota.

This will mark the sixth time that a Mifflin County All-Star team will be in a Babe Ruth World Series. This will be the first for the 14-year-old level.

Mifflin County pulled out the game in eight innings, 8-3.

The game was tied 3-3 after seven innings.

Madden Weaver went the first seven for Mifflin County. He only allowed four hits. He struck out five and won. Broomall scored their runs early, two in the first and one in the second.

“Madden pitched a great game,” said a happy Bill Corbin, the Mifflin County manager, “Chase Hartung came and did the job for us in the eighth.”

Hartung faced three batters and got them all out to clinch the title as Broomall was the home team.

Mifflin County scored a run in the first, one in the third and tied the game with one in the fifth.

It looked like Mifflin County was going to take the lead in the top of the seventh as it got the bases loaded but three straight strikes and the rally was over.

Then in the eighth, things fell apart for Broomall and the Mifflin County bats came to life.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Corbin, “A couple of misplays and then the crowd got into it. It’s tough to win on the road with the lights and all.”

Logan Ruth started the rally when he reached on error. Reese Christine followed with a single and then Braxton Smith unloaded a 2-run triple.Jayden Smith reached on an error and Braxton Smith came home. Jayden Smith later scored on a wild pitch, Gavin Powell was hit by a pitch and Chase Leister was walked intentionally to load the bases. Powell wrapped up the scoring when he came home on an error.

Ruth made an outstanding catch at third base to start the eighth inning. Leister had two outstanding plays in left field. In the third, he ran for a ball in the gap and dove for the ball for the second out of the inning. In the third, he crashed against the fence in foul territory and came up with the third out.

Mifflin County finished with seven hits. Braxton Smith had two.
