LANCASTER — Tuesday did not go the way Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 had hoped.
The Todd Engle-coached American Legion baseball team entered Tuesday in the winners bracket of the state tournament, but suffered a pair of losses to Tiffin Post 169 and Napoleon Post 300 as its 2022 season came to a close.
Beverly/Lowell couldn’t get anything going against Tiffin in the first game, falling 10-0 in six innings.
Post 389/750 immediately faced a 2-0 deficit in the first against Napoleon, but got a run back in the bottom of the first on Wade Pauley’s RBI single.
Beverly/Lowell had a chance to tie in the second with runners on the corners and two outs, but Ethan Duskey was caught stealing at second.
Napoleon plated three more runs in the top of the fourth, with the big blow being DJ Newman’s two-run double to make it 5-1.
Seth Dennis led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and later scored on Owen Brown’s double to make it 5-2.
Napoleon got that run back in the top of the sixth, but Beverly/Lowell answered with an RBI single by Jude Huffman, making it 6-3 going into the seventh.
Napoleon added an insurance run in the top-half of the seventh, putting Post 389/750 in a position where it needed to score four to stay alive.
Beverly/Lowell put runners on the corners to start the bottom of the seventh and got a run home on Duskey’s RBI groundout. However, Napoleon then converted a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play to end the game and eliminate Post 389/750 from the tournament with a final score of 7-4.
Cameron Tennant started and pitched four innings to take the loss, with Seth and Shawn Miller both pitching in relief.
Napoleon improved to 35-3 while Beverly/Lowell finished 2022 with a 26-10 record.
